Agriculture Academy Library: dates and events

1924, September 3 – Agricultural Academy in Dotnuva was established. At the same time the Library was founded and originally composed from Dotnuva Agricultural Technique Library, containing 5043 items.

1939 – 29 300 stock items, 278 readers. Most books in German; a lot of rare books on agriculture and Lithuanian studies.

1944, July – Library was burned by retreating Germans.

1944, November – Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture was opened, and the library was also restored.

1946 – library moved to Kaunas – Central Academy House in Kęstučio Street.

In the first post-war years, Library fund grew quite rapidly. It was given the items from the libraries of the Chamber of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture; a lot of items were received from Lithuanian and Russian higher education institutions.

1946-1951 – The great damage for newly completed library was done by the libraries’ “clean-up” campaign at that time. Over 5,000 items published in Lithuania or abroad in 1918 and 1944 were removed from the stock and destroyed.

1950 – more than 38 000 items in stock, 150 periodicals subscribed.

1964 – Library, together with the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture, moved to Noreikiskes, a specially equipped premises in the Central House.

1980 – A department in the Third House was established – Textbook Lending Department and Students’ Reading Room.

1995 – Library automation begins: library information system ALISE, developed at Riga University, is installed.

1996 – Library of Lithuanian University of Agriculture.

1998 – Library became a member of AGLINET, the global network of agricultural libraries.

2000 – integral library system ALEPH500 (Israel, Ex Libris) is installed.

2011 – Library of Aleksandras Stulginskis University.

2013-2014 – Library reconstruction: all premises renewed, open stock available for readers.

2019 – Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy Library.
