Mission
The mission of the Library is to provide the University community with access to information resources, services and spaces necessary for study, research, professional qualifications, knowledge creation and sharing.
The main aims and objectives of the Library are:
- Provide access to information resources (both printed and other physical media, as well as electronic) relevant to the University’s fields of study and research;
- Create and maintain an environment conducive to learning and creative work, ensuring the availability of both physical and electronic spaces;
- Train the community to effectively search, evaluate, select and use information from information sources in an ethical and responsible manner through information literacy training, information and advisory services;
- Collect, preserve and provide access to the University’s scientific/artistic output and data, as well as to information about researchers and their activities;
- Actively support the Open Science policy to make the University’s scientific/art outputs, data, information on scientific activities available not only to the scientific community but also to the general public;
- Increase the dissemination of the University’s scientific/arts output and activities nationally and internationally;
- Administer and develop the University Research Management System (VDU CRIS), to contribute to a more efficient administration of research activities;
- Assist researchers, departments to optimise the visibility and impact of their scientific output (e.g. analysis of science metrics);
- Use an advanced library services platform and other systems to improve the management, accessibility and search efficiency of information resources;
- Administer and maintain the University’s Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation Database (ETD) in order to collect, preserve and provide access to theses and dissertations;
- Administer and maintain text matching programmes to ensure academic integrity;
- Administer, maintain and develop the Open Journal System (OJS) for the management and publishing of the University’s journals;
- Develop e-services and modern digital tools, applying artificial intelligence and other advanced technology solutions in information management;
- Digitise, organise exhibitions and present to the public significant heritage objects of Vytautas Magnus University;
- Develop the library as an open space for community gathering, learning and collaboration;
- Maintain a dialogue with the academic community, taking into account their needs and expectations;
- Participate in national and international projects, sharing best practices with other institutions.
