International Open Access Week
International Open Access Week is celebrated worldwide from 23 to 29 October to promote the open access movement and inspire the public to contribute to open knowledge sharing. Open Access is free, unrestricted and unpaid online access to scholarly output.
The theme of this year’s Open Access Week is “Community over Commercialisation“, which aims to address questions such as which formats of open science activities better serve the interests of both the general public and the academic community, how to avoid the over-commercialisation of science, how to support non-commercial models of academic publishing, and how to make better use of the existing community-managed research infrastructures such as repositories and open access publishing platforms.
One of the non-commercial models of open access publishing is Diamond Open Access. This is an academic publishing model where journals and platforms do not charge either authors or readers. Diamond Open Access journals are publishing initiatives owned by the academic community, which are encouraged to be supported by UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science, cOAlition S’s Diamond Open Access Action Plan.
During this Open Access Week, we invite members of the academic community to discover and explore Diamond Open Access journals. Currently, the global Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) lists over 13,000 journals that do not charge article preparation fees, including 56 in Lithuanian.
